Blue Filament's legal team is headed by attorneys Mary Margaret L. O'Donnell and Avery Goldstein who have over three decades of combined experience working in the intellectual property field. In addition to other professionals, they are supported by a team of patent agents and intellectual property specialists, all with long-standing intellectual property experience in trademarks, patents, copyrights and enforcement issues. The Blue Filament Team has prosecuted and managed thousands of patents and trademarks throughout the world.

The Blue Filament Team has participated in numerous administrative enforcement proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB), Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and other administrative bodies throughout the world. Our working relationship with litigators who share our values support the comprehensive service we provide. Mary Margaret L. O'Donnell
Before founding Blue Filament Intellectual Property, Ms. O'Donnell co-chaired the Trademark Group at the intellectual property firm of Rader Fishman & Grauer and before then handled commercial litigation, intellectual property, trade secret and product liability matters at the general practice firm Miller Canfield Paddock & Stone. In addition, she previously clerked at two intellectual property firms in Paris, France. She is entrepreneurial by nature and founded Blue Filament to offer clients flexible, cost-effective intellectual property counsel outside the strictures of high-overhead environments.
Ms. O'Donnell has been recognized by her peers and business organizations as a SuperLawyer Rising Star, a Michigan Lawyers' Weekly Up & Coming Attorney, and a Crain's 40 Under 40 business leader. She is a frequent speaker and lecturer in and outside of the United States, and is an adjunct professor for an LLM seminar on International Trademark Law.
Ms. O'Donnell has secured protection and enforced rights across a wide variety of fields, and currently serves as co-chair of the Trademark Litigation Subcommittee of the Intellectual Property Litigation Committee of the ABA Section of Litigation.
She received an LLM in Intellectual Property from the Université Bordeaux IV in Bordeaux, France, her Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School, her Bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, and also completed political science and law programs in Aix-en-Provence, France and Shanghai, China.
The Blue Filament firm is supported by a team of professionals with wide and deep intellectual property experience. The offices of Blue Filament are located in Birmingham, Michigan, but the firm offers services to clients throughout the United States, and internationally through an established network of attorneys. Ms. O'Donnell is a member of INTA (International Trademark Association), ECTA (European Community Trademark Association), the ABA (American Bar Association), MIPLA (Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association), WBA (Women's Bar Association), OCBA (Oakland County Bar Association), and NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners).

Avery N. Goldstein
Dr. Goldstein has a strong background in inventorship, business and the entrepreneurial arts. Prior to founding the Patent Procurement Services firm, he was chair of the bio-tech group at the intellectual property firm of Gifford Krass and was a research engineer with Dow Chemical Company. He created Patent Procurement Services in 2011 with the goal of offering high-caliber intellectual property counsel on a lean platform and joined forces with Blue Filament Law in 2013. His practice includes designs, biotechnology, nanotechnology, chemistry, materials, physics, telecommunications, copyrights and trademarks.
He is admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the Michigan State Bar.
He received his Juris Doctor degree from Wayne State University Law School and received a doctoral degree in physical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. His doctoral thesis focused on quantum confinement in nanocrystals and encompassed work done at the U.S. Department of Energy, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory with A. Paul Alivisatos. He also completed a B.S. degree in chemistry and a B.S. degree in biological science from Wayne State University. His research there involved virology with Vishnu Hari and quantum chemistry with Joseph Francisco. After completing graduate school, he worked in Central Research at the Dow Chemical Company where his research concerned advanced materials for use in composites and ceramics, as well as development of phase-change materials.
With the goal of teaching inventors how to interact with IP professionals, he also edited the book, Patent Law For Scientists and Engineers. This book memorializes basic aspects of patents that an inventor is likely to encounter and facilitate interactions with searchers, intellectual property attorneys, and licensing professionals. He was also the editor of The Handbook of Nanophase Materials (Marcel Dekker).
Dr. Goldstein serves as an Editorial Board Member of the ABA Science and Technology Section Journal, The SciTech Lawyer, and is also a member of the International Trademark Association (INTA), the Michigan Intellectual Property Association (MIPLA) and the German-American Chamber of Commerce – Michigan.
